NFYI believes that the most effective changes come from the grassroots level. Our leadership corps was developed to create a nationwide network of youth that can be mobilized and organized to support various initiatives that would improve outcomes for foster youth across the country. To date, we’ve had over 80 youth involved in our leadership corps programs.
Our Leadership Corps program consists of bimonthly online webinars that youth are invited to participate in. These webinars are designed to provide youth with knowledge and training in community organizing as well as to teach them essential life skills. Through our hour-long webinars, youth are taught the basics of community organizing and learn how use community organizing tactics in their own communities. The second focus of these webinars is to build on our job shadowing and internship programs by offering life skills training courses that teach youth how to do things like write resumes and cover letters along with other essential skills that foster youth may need.
We invite different speakers to share their experiences and expertise with youth while encouraging youth to actively lead in the program. To keep in communication with our audience, we send out a monthly newsletter written for youth by youth to highlight the great work they are doing in their own communities, as well as to spread awareness of some of the policies and issues directly impacting youth across the country.
